Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor to Battle Superman, Crippling Social Anxiety

In the film, Lex Luthor will become a supervillain after his best friend sues him for taking all the credit for an invention that they had created together.

Today, director Zack Snyder announced that Jesse Eisenberg will play Lex Luthor in the upcoming film Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, in which he will battle the iconic superheroes as well as his own endearing yet paralyzing awkwardness.

“Imagine Lex Luthor as the quirky, misunderstood loner who you’ve always imagined him to be,” said Snyder. “He’s a little obsessive-compulsive, but deep down he’s just looking for love. And he wants to blow up Metropolis.”

Excerpts from a released scene show Eisenberg’s Luthor awkwardly bumping into an attractive woman at a Starbucks before mumbling an apology and murdering an arms dealer who looked at him the wrong way. Another scene contains a three-minute monologue by Luthor wondering whether Superman finds it easy to make new friends, because no matter how many nuclear missiles Luthor builds, he still finds it difficult to talk to strangers.

“Lex Luthor’s a great character, and definitely going to be a force to be reckoned with in this movie,” Eisenberg said. “He’s got a massive criminal empire, a bunch of dangerous futuristic weaponry, and really biting sarcasm.”
