Local Man Attempts to Return Overdue Knife to Library, Gets Arrested

Before leaving the library, students' bags are checked for stolen books, films and deadly weapons.

Earlier Wednesday, Harvard University Police Department officers apprehended a shirtless white man who was attempting to return a knife to Lamont Library. A subsequent misunderstanding between HUPD officers and the individual resulted in a brief altercation and arrest.

According to HUPD spokesman Steven G. Catalano, the individual was also being sought by the Cambridge Police Department. “We received a call earlier today to keep an eye out for a shirtless white male with an overdue knife,” he said in an email to everyone in the Harvard Community except the students, faculty, and staff.

Administrators also made sure that students were not notified about the situation via MessageMe. “At first, we weren’t sure that this description would be enough. Surely, we thought, he’d put on a shirt, and maybe get rid of his knife—but nope! He fit our description perfectly.”

Eyewitnesses allege that the man was in fact attempting to return the knife to Lamont. The blade was more than three months overdue and for which he had been receiving a series of increasingly harassing emails from the Harvard Library. Many students who were present for the arrest describe the man as screaming, “They’re going to charge me extra on my term bill! EXTRA!!!” while attempting to throw the knife into the book return at the front of the library.

Indeed, the knife found on the shirtless white man is consistent with one held by the Harvard University Library that has been checked out for more than 11 months. “We have many weapons,” said Lamont librarian Amy Frisch, smiling darkly to herself. “There was only one that wasn’t in our collection, because it was overdue. But now it has returned to the fold.”

“We hope that students take advantage of this situation to learn that the library is very serious about enforcing its overdue policy,” said Catalano. “If you don’t return your books, you’ll be arrested. Have a great reading week!”
